🅾 Felix the Fearless

Base jumpers are daredevils who jump from high buildings, bridges and mountains with parachutes. Felix Baumgartner wasn’t just a base jumper, he was a space jumper. He jumped from a balloon that reached 36 km up in the sky at the edge of space. Felix is your prototypical daredevil, a person who takes risks without any regard for their own safety. He is known as Felix the Fearless, but he was so overcome with fear before his space jump that he fled the country.

Felix Baumgartner always wanted to fly. At just 16-years-old, Felix began to skydive, and soon after he began BASE jumping. He broke 14 world records. He was the first person to skydive across the English Channel using a carbon-fiber wing and he’s jumped from the world’s tallest building.

In 2012, Felix planned his biggest stunt yet. He would skydive from more than 36 kilometers above the Earth. He would travel faster than the speed of sound!

Even though he’d jumped more than 2,500 times before, this time was different. He was jumping from so high that he need a pressurized suit. He felt confined by the suit, and that terrified him. He was so freaked out that he actually fled the country. His sponsor had already invested millions into fulfilling his dream and they weren’t happy when he ran away. Neither was Felix. He says it was the lowest point in his entire life.

Felix couldn’t let his dream go. He underwent a psychological evaluation and learned that he had claustrophobia - an extreme fear of small spaces.

Felix worked with a psychologist who said he simply needed to train his brain to focus on the big picture. He needed to keep his mind off of the suit and remember his ultimate goal - the big jump.

To practice all of this, his psychologist created terrifying situations for Felix. He pushed Felix to the edge of panic, and then challenged him to maintain composure by controlling his mind and saying positive things to himself. They did this for over 30 hours.

In the end, Felix overcame his fear of the safety suit, and he completed the jump.

Felix proved that being brave isn’t about being fearless. As the famous revolutionary Nelson Mandela once said, “The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

🅾 Robot Rights

A mother and her six children were accused of killing a five-year-old boy in Savigny, France in 1457. The mother and children were brought before a court to answer for their crimes. The mother was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging, but her children were freed. Although the six children had blood on them, no one had witnessed them attacking the 5-year-old boy. It was a standard court case with villagers who had witnessed the crime, a defense attorney, prosecutors and a judge. The only unusual thing was that the mother who was sentenced to death was a pig, and her six children were piglets.

By modern standards, bringing an animal to court sounds ridiculous, but in the Middle Ages in Europe, it was not uncommon. There are records of pigs, horses, dogs, cows, and goats being judged in court for crimes. Today, if an animal were to kill a human, the animal would probably be put down, but there would be no trial. To judge an animal by human standards requires the belief that animals have the same level of free will and the same sense of morality that humans do. That is exactly how some medieval Europeans saw things. In the case of the six piglets that were set free, the judge said that they were too young to make correct moral choices. Furthermore, their law-breaking mother had been a poor role model to them.

While the days of treating animals like people are long gone, some people are suggesting that we should start treating robots as people. Currently, robots are considered inanimate objects that are the property of humans. In a future where robots may one day become intelligent, we might have to rethink this. A committee of the European parliament is discussing plans to treat robots as “electronic persons.” Some of their proposals include giving robots the right to own and trade money, copyright their creations, and force their owners to pay into a pension. What do you think? Is robot rights a modern day version of medieval pigs on trial, or is artificial intelligence really on the horizon?

🅾 Gentleman Or Pirate

Depending on whom you ask, Felix von Luckner was a noble, a gentleman, a pirate, and a hero. Born into a German military family, he dreamed of becoming a naval officer since he was a child, even though his father pushed him to follow in his footsteps and become a cavalry officer.

At the age of 13, after failing his tests in school, von Luckner ran away and joined a Russian commercial ship. He sailed to Australia where he became a jack-of-all-trades. Some of the odd jobs he took over the years included a fisherman, a lighthouse keeper, a boxer, a circus worker, a bartender, a railroad construction worker, and a guard in the Mexican army for President Diaz.

At the age of 20, von Luckner returned to Germany and fulfilled his dream to become a naval officer. By 1914, World War I had broken out and the German navy was no match for the powerful British and her allies. One way that the Germans tried to balance the scales was by attacking merchant ships carrying supplies for their enemies.

Von Luckner outfitted a large sailboat with hidden guns and engines, and disguised it as a harmless commercial sailboat carrying lumber. His plan was simple. They’d approach a merchant ship asking for the time, and when the merchant ship got close enough, they’d raise their German flags and fire three warning shots.

After boarding each merchant ship, they’d take everyone prisoner and then sink the ship. It was at this point that von Luckner got his reputation for being a gentleman pirate. He had outfitted his boat with 400 bunks for his prisoners and spacious rooms for the captured captains and officers. He even had special dining rooms outfitted with French and English magazines and books and a gramophone with the latest music.

After the war, he wrote, “War or no war, I still considered all sailors my pals and had my own ideas as to how our prisoners should be treated… I wanted them to feel as if they were my guests.”

Time after time von Luckner pulled the same trick sinking French, British and American ships, while treating his prisoners with unheard of hospitality. At one point when he had collected 262 prisoners, supplies were low, so he gave them a ship that would take them to freedom. Before doing so, he paid each of his prisoners their normal working wage for the time they had been imprisoned on his ship.

Over the course of 225 days, von Luckner sank 16 ships with only one accidental casualty. His days as a gentleman pirate ended when a tidal wave destroyed his ship and he ended up being captured.
